History: Vanai was born and raised in Kunark. Her family resided in a village within the Fen’s of Nathsar hidden from Venril Sathir’s prying eyes. The village served as a refuge as well as a staging point for Iksar whom were outright opposed to Venril’s rule over the lands of Kunark . As the only child, Vanai stayed home with her mother assisting in creating various alchemical solutions to aid in the resistance movement as her father was out on the front lines of duty. Being part of a Sathirian resistance group was not an easy life, yet they family made do with what was made available. For Vanai, the only remaining memories of these days was her mother's lullaby's and how her father smiled when she brought him his favored cocoa drink after coming back from the field.
As Vanai came into adolescence, the secrecy of the village’s location was unveiled. As it were, Venril had learned of the village’s location through his endless network of spies and sent a strike militia to have the band of resistance fighters wiped out once and for all. Only a few scouts made it back to the village in time to warn them of the approaching army. A group of villagers including Vanai’s family took to the snowcapped Ryjesium Mountains for shelter. This was the first time Vanai had ever seen or experienced snow. Midway through the treacherous mountains, they were overrun by a band of Sathirian scouts. Many were killed, including Vanai’s parents, and those who surrendered or could no longer fight were taken prisoners to be slaves on Venril’s budding Naval fleet.
Vanai endured many months at sea under her captors, dealing with their insults, beatings, and working conditions. Encounters with other seafaring vessels not of Sathirian origin often ended poorly for the opposition. She feared this would be her fate to die at sea so very far away from anything she ever knew and loved. Vanai managed to persevere by recalling her parents’ strength. The only semblance of peace she maintained was the memories of her parents and interestingly enough a young chokidai she had managed to befriend whom was locked away in a crate in the ships lower holds. The
Then one eventful day, as the crew was weary from countless days at sea, fate intervened. The Sathirian ship was overtaken and raided by creatures Vanai had heard only tales and stories of. Such creatures from far off lands, creatures without scales, creatures she had come to know as softskins. This was her first time seeing softskins, so she kept herself hidden in the lower hold of the ship hoping to avoid detection. They greedily searched the ship finding many things of interest to them. One such creature caught her attention. She instantly recognized its form, the creature was Iksar, yet it was not in the typical vestments on one. Fear overrode her curiosity as a larger, more grotesque creature began shouting whet she believed to be orders to the others. Vanai had never heard such languages before, but as she felt the vessel moving about again, she knew that these creatures had claimed the Sathirian vessel as their prize.
A few weeks later the vessels arrive at a port or a grand city, a city dominated the shadow of a menacing tower suspended by powerful arcane forces. She snuck out of the vessel late at night with her chokidai companion in tow surprised to find other Iksar within the softskin city. She assumed they were all in allegiance with Sathir but none of them cared to glance her way, in fact, it was as if she didn’t exist to them. Deciding it would be best to blend in and not draw attention to herself, Vanai strolls up to the end of the pier and stares blankly out into the distance, out back across the sea towards her homeland of Kunark and simply collapses from overwhelming exhaustion.
Vanai is eventually awakened by the whimpering of her chokidai companion, whom apparently had never left her side. She found herself lying in bed in a strangely comforting home. “So, you’re finally awake?” said a figure sitting across the room. Vanai froze, unsure of what to do as she realized that this creature spoke her language. “My friend found you on the Freeport pier nearly dead. Thankfully I was in the area to be of some assistance.” “Who are you?” Vanai managed to mutter weakly. The creature chuckled at her question, “Forgive me, where are my manners. My friend, the one who brought you here, his name is Kassat Vemat, my name is Traku Kylox.”
